Apple announced on Tuesday that the iPhone will be available for pre-order from the 16th shortly followed by the release of iOS 17 available for public download on September 18.

The iPhone is forged in titanium, featuring the groundbreaking A17 Pro chip, a quad-sensor 48MegaPixel camera, and the Lightning port is to be ditched for USB-C under EU regulations. USB 3 for the Pro, USB 2 for the rest.

  • The New A17 Bionic 3780Mhz:
  • Up to 20% faster GPU
  • Up to 10% faster CPU with 6 cores
  • Up to 2x faster Neural Engine performs nearly 35 trillion operations per second with 16 cores
  • Up to 4x faster ray tracing

The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max will be the first smartphones to feature a 3nm 6-core GPU and 8GB of RAM. The new GPU will be significantly more powerful than the previous generation, and the extra RAM will allow for smoother multitasking and better performance in demanding apps.

This new chip will allow for a whopping 19 billion transistors, 3 billion more than the previous generation. This will result in significant performance improvements, especially for gaming and CPU-intensive tasks.

Display Screen

The iPhone 15 Pro has an advanced Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion with refresh rates up to 120Hz. A Ceramic Shield front that’s even tougher than any smartphone glass.

With an Always-On display, your Lock Screen stays glanceable, and when turned on its side while charging will display the time, showcase your favourite photos or keep an eye on your widgets.

All three sensors on the iPhone 15 Pro Max will also have OIS, which helps to reduce camera shake and produce sharper images and videos. The telephoto sensor will also have 3D sensor-shift OIS and autofocus, which should further improve image quality and performance.

The iPhone 15 Pro features a 3x Telephoto camera and iPhone 15 Pro Max 5x at 120 mm with a new option for Log encoding and is the first smartphone in the world to support ACES, the Academy Color Encoding System

The Photonic Engine supercharges your portraits, giving you beautiful detail, true-to-life colour, zero shutter lag and up to two times better low-light performance. Cinematic mode automatically shifts the focus to the most important subject in a scene.

In Portrait mode, you can use continuous zoom in and out. Photos can shift focus between subjects after you take a shot.

  • Night mode with sharper details and more vivid colours, now powered by the Photonic Engine, enabled by the LiDAR scanner.
  • New Smart HDR captures subjects and the background with more true-to-life renderings of skin tones, while ensuring photos have brighter highlights, richer midtones, and deeper shadows when viewed in the Photos app.

A great feature is the ability to shoot ProRes video directly to external storage and switch drives whilst still filming. It includes a dedicated AV1 decoder

The processor inside the non-pro versions is the same A16 Bionic found in iPhone 14.

iOS 17

The update includes several new features and improvements, including a new lock screen, new widgets, and new ways to interact with apps.

Apple’s software updates are available on the day of their release to anyone who wants it, whereas the Android rollout is always staged depending on the Brand device which has some people waiting weeks to get the new OS.

The new lock screen allows users to customize the look and feel with different styles, wallpapers, and widgets. Users can also create multiple lock screens and switch between them easily.

The new widgets are more powerful and interactive than ever before. They can now be pinned to the lock screen, making it easier to access the information you need at a glance.

iOS 17 also introduces new ways to interact with apps. For example, users can now swipe down on the home screen to see a list of all their open apps. They can also use Spotlight to search for apps, contacts, and more.

iOS 17 is compatible with all iPhones still supported by Apple, including the iPhone 13, iPhone 12, iPhone 11, and iPhone XR. The update will be available as a free over-the-air download.

In addition to iOS 17, Apple also announced the release of iPadOS 17 on September 18. iPadOS 17 includes many of the same features as iOS 17, as well as new features that are specific to the iPad. For example, iPadOS 17 introduces a new multitasking interface that makes it easier to work with multiple apps at the same time.

iOS 17 will be available on September 18th for these devices: – iPhone 14 – iPhone 14 Plus – iPhone 14 Pro – iPhone 14 Pro Max – iPhone 13 – iPhone 13 mini – iPhone 13 Pro – iPhone 13 Pro Max – iPhone 12 – iPhone 12 mini – iPhone 12 Pro – iPhone 12 Pro Max – iPhone 11 – iPhone 11 Pro – iPhone 11 Pro Max – iPhone XS – iPhone XS Max – iPhone XR – iPhone SE (2nd gen or later)

Both iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 are available for public download on September 18. To download the update, go to Settings > General > Software Update.

If you have an iPhone that is still supported by Apple, I recommend updating to iOS 17. The update includes several new features and improvements to make your iPhone more powerful and versatile.

The Competiton and Our Verdict

The iPhone uses its own high-speed processor but in other areas, I have always felt it was lacking. For example, many other flagship phones come with more RAM memory and already have Wi-Fi 6E, cameras with more megapixels and 8K video. The ability to post-focus photos might be new for Apple but not for others.

I currently use the Google Pixel 7, with a 50-megapixel camera, and 8GB Memory, the Pixel Pro has 12GB. I have become disappointed with the bare Android OS, even the ‘GOOGLE ONE’ did not add what I needed.
I previously had the Samsung S20 and the OS and apps had added ability. Smarthings app could control my other Samsung devices.
