Watch video of ferocious blaze of e-bike on Fire at Sutton Railway station

London Fire crews were called to an e-bike fire at Sutton railway station during rush hour raising concerns about the safety of these increasingly popular vehicles.

Firefighters described the blaze as “ferocious” and warned it could have had “tragic consequences” if the timing had been different.

Station Officer Nigel McLachlan said the owner had bought the e-bike from an online marketplace four months previously, with no apparent issues since.

“This incident only serves to highlight that it is very important to get these products from a reputable high-street seller so you know [their] full history,” he said.

“If items are bought from online marketplaces there is more risk it will be sold without the correct battery and charger, which can lead to a devastating fire.”

The incident involved an e-bike purchased just four months prior from an online marketplace. Station Officer Nigel McLachlan emphasised the importance of buying e-bikes from reputable retailers to ensure they have a clear history and meet safety standards. He cautioned against online marketplaces where there’s a greater risk of getting a product with an incompatible battery or charger, which can significantly increase the fire risk.

This incident underscores a growing trend in London. E-bike and e-scooter fires are becoming the fastest-growing fire risk in the city, with statistics indicating at least 40 such fires already this year.

In response to these concerns, the London Fire Brigade has issued safety tips for e-bike users:

  • Safe Storage: Always store your e-bike in a safe and clear location, ideally away from your living space, such as a garage or shed. This minimises the risk of fire spreading to your home in case of an e-bike battery malfunction.
  • Proper Charging: Only use the charger that came with your e-bike or one specifically recommended by the manufacturer. Avoid using generic or third-party chargers, as they might not be compatible and could lead to overheating and fire.
  • Battery Maintenance: Never tamper with or modify your e-bike battery. If you suspect any damage, take it to a qualified professional for repair or replacement. Additionally, avoid converting a regular bike into an e-bike yourself, as improper installation can create fire hazards.
  • Charging Precautions: Allow the battery to cool down completely before charging it. This reduces the risk of overheating during the charging process. Once the battery is fully charged, unplug the charger immediately. Don’t leave it plugged in for extended periods.
  • Smoke Alarms: Install smoke alarms in the area where you charge your e-bike. Early detection of a potential fire can give you valuable time to evacuate and call emergency services.

By following these safety guidelines, e-bike riders can help minimize the risk of fires and ensure a safe and enjoyable riding experience.
