A former US Navy pilot has accused the government of downplaying the threat posed by UFOs, after giving evidence at a congressional hearing.
The hearing was the first of its kind in the US Congress, and it comes amid growing public interest in the issue of UFOs.
In recent years, there have been a number of high-profile reports of UAP sightings, including by military pilots. This also lead to that NASA held its first public meeting on the issue earlier this year describing it as “serious business”.
Ryan Graves said the number of unidentified flying objects, or UAPs (unidentified anomalous phenomena), was being “grossly underreported” and was an “urgent” issue.
He told the House Oversight Subcommittee that military air crew and commercial pilots were frequently witnessing UAPs, but that the stigma around reporting them was preventing the government from getting a full picture of the threat.
He said during a training mission 10 miles off the coast, two aircraft got “split” by a UAP described as a “dark grey or black cube inside a clear sphere”.
Graves was joined at the hearing by retired U.S. Navy (Ret.) Cmdr. David Fravor, who described seeing a small white “Tic Tac” shaped object close to the ocean surface moving erratically.
Fravor said the object travelled more than 60 miles in less than a minute, and that it was unlike anything he had ever seen before.
“The controller told us that these objects had been observed for over two weeks coming down from over 80,000 feet, rapidly descending to 20,000 feet, hanging out hours and then going straight back up,” he told hearing.
Former US intelligence official David Grusch claimed under oath that aliens exist and that the US government is in possession of UFOs and “non-human” biologics. had been recovered by the government, but he had never seen an alien body or seen the alleged alien craft himself.
The US government has also acknowledged that it is investigating the phenomenon, and in 2021 it released a report that said there were more than 140 UAP sightings that could not be explained.
The hearing on Tuesday was an opportunity for lawmakers to get more information from witnesses about the UAP phenomenon, and to ask questions about the government’s response to it.
Lawmakers also expressed concern about the stigma around reporting UAP sightings, and they urged the government to do more to encourage people to come forward.
The hearing was a significant step forward in the government’s acknowledgement of the UAP phenomenon, and it is likely to lead to further scrutiny of the issue in the coming months and years.
